Pfizer Inc.’s (PFE) acquisition of its leading drugmaker has brought a new level of confidence to a growing pharmaceutical industry that has seen the generic drugmaker increasingly priced itself above its competitors in prices for its most well-known drug, Norvasc.
Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest drugmaker, is hoping to raise its prices by about 1 percent this year, the company announced yesterday, and in January it will begin selling the brand version of Norvasc.
The acquisition is the latest in a string of large-scale price increases that have put the drugmaker’s prices on a list of best-selling drugs, including Lipitor, Plavix and Plavix CR, the maker of Plavix and Norvasc.
Norvasc, which treats hypertension, high blood pressure, heart failure and some types of angina, has seen price increases of more than 10 percent in recent months.
Pfizer’s latest price increase comes as the company has seen a string of price increases, including one that totaled more than $5.3 million in January and another of more than $2.8 million in January to $2.6 million. The price increases will be for about a fifth of a 10 percent increase, Pfizer’s spokeswoman Nancy Hirsch said.
The price increase for Norvasc was expected to be on the lower end of Pfizer’s list price, but that has fallen dramatically over the past few years.
In January, Pfizer began selling a generic version of Lipitor, the drug Pfizer developed in order to get its list price down to about 1 percent. Lipitor had been a big seller, but its price increased from about $3.5 million to $11.5 million.
Pfizer has had several deals to bring its product to the lower end of the Pfizer list price, including the acquisition of Pfizer Inc. for $4.4 billion in 2012.
Pfizer’s acquisition of Lipitor will allow Pfizer to take the top spot from the generic drugmaker in the company’s overall portfolio of drugs. The acquisition is expected to increase its price by about 1 percent to $4.4 billion, which is a $3.3 billion increase over the previous year.
Pfizer also has an existing patent on Lipitor, which will allow the company to bring the drug to market in two generic forms. The company also plans to launch two more of its other drugs in 2012, including Lipitor CR, in the U. S. and Europe. Pfizer will pay the company about $2.2 billion in annual sales and other costs to bring the drug to market.
Pfizer has also been looking for an alternative for Norvasc, which treats hypertension and angina. It’s the only drug on the market that Pfizer’s Norvasc already has, but the company still sells it under the trade name Norvab.
Pfizer’s new deal with Lipitor will also allow it to sell the drug as a generic. The drug, which is sold in several U. pharmacies, is already the most widely used drug in the world.
Pfizer also plans to pay an additional $2.9 billion to resolve a legal matter brought by a company that has filed an application to renew its patent on Norvasc.
Pfizer’s acquisition of Lipitor is a significant step in bringing Norvasc to the attention of the American medical establishment. As the drugmaker’s top seller, Norvasc can bring the price to $1.6 billion in annual sales. The company also has a U. patent on Lipitor that it has filed in the U. in order to bring the drug to market.
The acquisition, which is expected to be announced by Pfizer’s board of directors, will be the first in a string of large-scale price increases that have put the drugmaker’s prices on a list of best-selling drugs, including Lipitor, Plavix and Norvasc.
In April, Pfizer announced that it had acquired Pfizer’s U. patent for Lipitor and that the company would pay about $2.2 billion to resolve the patent litigation. Pfizer had $2.9 billion in annual sales.
Pfizer’s new deal with Lipitor will allow Pfizer to bring the drug to market in two generic forms.

Norvasc is a powerful diuretic that has the ability to help prevent fluid loss in the kidneys. It is known as a potassium-sparing diuretic and belongs to the group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It is taken orally, usually once daily, for various medical conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, and nephrotic syndrome.
Norvasc is used to treat hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, and high blood pressure. It belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors).
The active ingredient in Norvasc is a combination of a potent vasodilator (vasodilator agent), which works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing the amount of urine produced by the kidneys. The urine contains more than 95% of a hormone called aldosterone, which is responsible for the development of fluid loss. This hormone helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the amount of fluid lost.
Norvasc helps to protect the kidneys from damage caused by the development of high blood pressure in the body.
Norvasc is a highly effective diuretic that is available in the form of tablets, oral liquid, and a chewable tablet. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and high blood sugar in patients with diabetes mellitus.
